VERNON, NOV. 18, 2004 -- Type By Design, a Skagit County
graphic-design company, captured first place recently for
a logo concept designed for Skagit Public Utility District and submitted
to a major graphic-design competition.
Dana Chrysler, founder and principal of the 2-year old graphics
firm, said the award topped 22 other entries in the 2004 logo competition
sponsored by the About.com Graphic Design Forum, an Internet-based
global organization of graphic designers, and judged by several
of its members.
"I am honored my work has been recognized by a jury of professionals
whom I admire," Chrysler said. "They represent an incredible
pool of talent in the graphic-design community and I am thrilled
to compete in such good company."
The winning design shows a minimal section of light green pipe,
three bands of light blue suggesting pristine water coursing through
it and the name "Skagit PUD" written below. Click here

Judges looked at symbols, balance, consistency, contrast, general
appearance and how they all tied together in making their choice,
according to Chrysler.
"In selecting the winner," said competition judge and
designer Alina Hagen, "I looked at whether the design targeted
the correct market, whether it said something about the type of
business it was representing, the type and color, whether it could
have a black-and-white version or be printed in fewer than four
colors to keep costs down."
"It is a very tight-looking logo and everything tied together
nicely," added Calvin Lee, another judge.
Bill Johnston summed up the judges' deliberations by observing,
"The Skagit PUD design is very effective at meeting its market
objective of providing a distinctive, contempory, and official looking
public utility seal. It has a clean, pure look that conveys the
essense of what it is selling. Clean, pure water. Overall, the design
is an intelligent use of color and type."
