Meet the Judges
Listed below are the judges who determined the 2004 About.com
Logo Competition's winners. When you look at their credentials,
you can see why I am honored by their recognition!
Steven D. Fleshman
Steve has been doing identity work, illustration and direct
response creative for over twenty years for employers and
clients like Capital One, The Experience Music Project, High
Museum of Art, Electronic Data Systems, America Online, Wells
Fargo Bank, Provident Bank of New Jersey, The Pittsburgh Symphony
Orchestra, Intuit and Marsh and McLennan. He has won numerous
awards and taught classes in design and typography for the
USDA Graduate School and Northern Virginia Community College.
Steve's been published in Looking Good in Quark XPress, 1000
Designer Greetings: Creative Correspondence Designed for All
Occasions, The Page, and The Editorial Eye. He has served
on the Board of Directors of the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan
Washington as well as local nonprofit organizations.
Sara Waters
Sara Waters is an award-winning designer and art director
with 14-years experience in web and graphic design. She started
the first half of her design career in the corporate arena
doing identity work, packaging, print collateral, advertising,
annual reports, web and multimedia. During the past 8 years,
Sara has focused her efforts on web design, translating client
concepts into artful, strategic and user-friendly websites
while maintaining a print designers aesthetic and sensitivity
to detail. Her work has been shown in Print and Graphis magazines.
She formed Sara Waters Design (http://sarawaters.com) in 2001.
Alina Hagen
Alina Hagen is located in Los Angeles, California and received
a BA degree in Visual Arts from the University of California,
San Diego, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She has taken a number
of individual art and design classes over the years, then
returned to school for three years to earn a certificate in
graphic design from UCLA. Alina has worked as a designer over
15 years in the private, public, and corporate sectors. She
currently works for WET Design. Her projects range from marketing
materials to plaque and panel design to designing books. WET
Design's latest book, The Fountains of Bellagio, will be available
the end of November. Alina is also a founding member and on
the management team of Creative Latitude (http://www.creativelatitude.com).
She is editor of the regular feature, "Graphic Make-overs"
(http://www.creativelatitude.com/graph/index.html). Some of

Valarie Martin Stuart
Valarie Martin Stuart is an art director, designer and production
artist based in Dallas, Texas, USA. Her boutique design studio,
Wavebrain Creative Communications, specializes in providing
businesses with creative and practical solutions for both
print and web. Valarie has over fifteen years experience in
the design field, including ten years as an independent contractor.
She has worked on national and international accounts for
many leading ad agencies, design studios and corporations.
Valarie has also been an Associate Professor of Graphic Design,
where in addition to teaching students the basics of design
and software, she lectures on important issues dealing with
the business of graphic design.
Calvin Lee
Calvin Lee is Senior Designer with Los Angeles-based Mayhem
Studios. His clients include Fagerholm & Jefferson Law
Corporation, Baca Sigala & Associates, DownTown Entertainment,
Prosperity Records, and MaxSports.
Dan Chudzynski
Dan Chudzynski comfortably settled into his third lifetime
career as a graphic designer about 10 years ago, previously
working as a photographer, then a printing pressman, all the
while aspiring to be a rock star. He established Envision
Design Studio in 1995, developing logos and the like, and
in 1998, pursuing his passion for food and shelter, took a
job as a graphic designer/web designer at a small Indiana
liberal arts college, where he's also well on his way to earning
an art degree-something he wishes he would have done 25 years
ago.
Janet Little
Janet Little's professional background includes work in a
variety of communications specialties, including writing,
advertising, and broadcasting. While earning an M.A. in Publications
Design from University of Baltimore, she oversaw publications
for the internationally-renowned Calvert School. She then
decided to concentrate her efforts on design and joined the
creative team of Ottenheimer Publishers, a book publisher/packager,
as a designer and project manager. Upon her departure, she
founded Janet Little Design & Photography, an independent
studio specializing in work with non-profits, the arts, and
businesses. Recent clients include: Peace Corps Fellows/USA,
Maryland Department of Natural Resources, NAFSA: Association
of International Educators, and Merritt Athletic Club.
Bill Johnston
Bill Johnston, a seasoned creative communicator,
has been practicing his various crafts of Creative Director,
Art Director, Copywriter, Designer and Illustrator for the
past thirty-seven years. His experience spans the corporate,
agency, freelance, and non-profit sectors.
